TheFutureisFandom.com was inspired by existing research done by Susan Kresnicka (of Kresnicka Research & Insights) and Dan Pappalardo (President of Troika).
Kresnicka and Pappalardo did a year-long study in an effort to understand fandom. In short, they learned that fandom is a reciprocal relationship between the fan and the brand. Kresnicka and Pappalardo wrote an article for Variety explaining the basics of the study and its findings.

"fandom is a relationship — a love relationship between the self and an
object of fandom" - Susan Kresnicka and Dan Pappalardo, writing for Variety |
When brands offer special experiences marketed directly to superfans, they are playing an active part in the "relationship" with the fan. Location tours, special exhibits and concerts, festivals, etc. are all ways that the brand is "giving back" to the fan.
When you nurture a relationship, it grows, ensuring a bright and promising future.

Keeping superfans happy makes sense. In research conducted by TheFutureisFandom.com,
79% of surveyed Game of Thrones fans said that they speak to non-fans about their love of Game of Thrones.
71% of respondents said that they've "converted" a non-fan.

This is why fandom is the future of entertainment marketing:
a superfan creates more superfans.
